The tour...

  • A stop in Altopascio is an encounter with more than a thousand years of history, which we can combine with a tour of the countryside around Lucca or, every two years, the Camellia Exhibition in the Compito area. Every two years on Mount Serra, in the area called the Compitese, there’s a wonderful exhibition entirely devoted to the old camellias in the Lucca area. The 22nd exhibition will take place every week ends of March 2011, with three sections.
  • The camellia routes in the gardens of old villas where camellia plantations were very important and a symbol of wealth; experimental camellias for tea; the “Camellietum Compitese” – a botanical garden with 500 old camellias; a scientific exhibition of cut flowers with extensive instructions on how to cultivate the Japanese camellias (around 200) in the Lucca area and elsewhere.
  • The history route in Pieve and Sant’Andrea di Compito illustrating past civil wars: the most important relic is the signalling tower dating back to the 13th century, a reminder of the rivalries between Pisa and Lucca..
  • The water route centred on the little River Visona, around which the village’s life revolved: on this route we encounter buildings linked to the water theme: the olive mill, spring water wash-house and the stone bridge.
The chinese tea ceremony, history followed by sample of chinese tea.
  • And for visitors to the village, the taste route and little square, organised by the Slow Food movement from Compito and Lucca’s orchards. There were lots of places where you could buy camellia plants, with music and art completing the programme on exhibition days.

Ideas...

There are lots of olive mills in the Compito area where you can sample excellent extra-virgin olive oil.
